Years ago, a wise person once told me that you can judge a person's (most of the time..a guy's) true character by the way they play the game (by game--I am referring to an actual sports game and not the 'dating game'). This past weekend was the annual softball tournament amongst the EM fellowships in the Philly area. Now, I've been warned by a few players from years of experience that these 'friendly' games are not so friendly at all. I was able to witness this first hand on Saturday. During times of high intensity, frustrations, anger, and annoyances were played out on the field. It's interesting to note the differing tendencies guys will show during these times. Some are outright verbal (close to abusive) and others are solemn in their own solitude. Now to be fairly honest, when girls witness these things, we are thinking in the back of our heads--wow...this is how this guy can be with me if we were in a relationship and if things got to be a bit tense. Now don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that guys should be complacent and expressionless of the fact of their team losing, but there is a way to show these things without the aforementioned negativity. And this, my friends, is called good sportsmanship. Why do guys become such poor sports? All for their ego's glory and taste of victory? Somewhere along the road, the fun aspect was tossed and left in the dust to hitch a ride with someone else.
On a side note: we won that championship on Saturday.
