Andy: I’ll be the number 2 guy here in Scranton in six weeks. How? Name repetition, personality mirroring and never breaking off a handshake. I’m always thinking one step ahead like a carpenter who makes stairs.
We have a new consultant here at the office. A late twenty-something new guy. Eager to work and eager to please, but not overwhelming. It's interesting being the 'new guy', there are fundamental characteristics that are permanently embedded into this role. Take this guy, Mike, easy to get along with, agreeable, joking around with the managers, earnestly making small talk, etc., but what makes it interesting is that I'm sure we can all attest to this. And thus, it has almost become expected for the 'new guy' to have these characteristics. Say the guy didn't possess these characteristics, I'm certain fellow employees, managers, etc., wouldn't find him an attractive candidate as an employee. Oh, the faces we put on to make it in this world! But to be honest, I like the guy. The women here had no trouble accepting the 'new guy', that's for sure! Women are vicious, but it works in Mike's favor. He's a good looking guy. Therefore, that's one less group of people to impress to climb that corporate ladder. However, beyond all this, his background info was what caught my attention: BA in English, MBA in Publishing, working at a children's publishing company and other publishing networks, and the clutch--writing on his spare time. Could he be the link to my next step in my career? Hmm..that's a thought. I wonder what this guy will be like in 2 weeks.
